The only thing scary about Spirit Hill Cemetery in Jordan is the state of the oldest part of the cemetery. As you can see, many of the oldest graves are broken and covered in dirt, lichen, or mold. It seems like someone tried to cobble broken grave markers together again at one point, but many are still just sitting in piles of broken pieces. Others are in desperate need of a good cleaning. It’s a sad sight.

Established as a public cemetery in 1860, the first burial took place at Spirit Hill Cemetery in 1861. It is the final resting place of several Civil War veterans and War of 1812 soldier, Joseph Coates. I imagine the hill’s beautiful vistas was why so many settlers and soldiers chose this cemetery over one of the several church-affiliated cemeteries located nearby.
